"Emma's Life" by Rachel

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Run"! Emma the emu was charging through the forest at top speed. It was a hot sunny day. Some brush near where she was grazing caught fire. She could hear the fire raging behind her. As she ran to her home, a jumble of fallen trees and twigs, she announced that they would have to leave the area immediately. Her newly hatched brother and sister, Elsa and Oswald, were running around the nest squeaking in terror. In the forest the fire kept burning, getting closer every minute. "Ok," Emma said, "lets get moving." In no time flat they were racing through the forest, Mama, Papa, Elsa, Oswald, and Emma. Elsa and Oswald safely on Mama's and papa's backs tucked in between their wings. As the family ran through burning brush and fallen logs Emma directed the scared family towards the river. They heard a sound. It sounded like a scared baby emu. When Emma ran towards the sound she discovered a sad baby emu. "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". "Aw," Emma said. "Mama," it said. "Come on," Emma said. "Maaa maaa," it said again. Emma picked up the emu. "Waaa, mama." Emma ran towards the river to find her family waiting in the water. "What do you have?" mama asked staring at the smoke stained bundle of feathers. "Found it," Emma replied. "The river is starting to get crowded," Papa said after a while. The baby emu had introduced himself as Eddie. Eddie was even newer hatched than Elsa or Oswald. What papa meant by crowded was that more emus had used the river as a fire escape. Whooosh. Emma, Elsa, Oswald, Eddie, Mama, and papa woke up. They watched as thunder boomed overhead and rain came pouring down drenching the emus. Emma had never been so happy to see rain in her life. Elsa and Oswald had even convinced Eddie to do a rain dance. "Eddie! EDDIE! EDDIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" an emu called from somewhere down river. "Mama!" Eddie called. As he Emma, Elsa, and Oswald splashed to the sound they found a pretty emu calling Eddie's name. "Eddie!" she cried and ran over to him. "Hello," Emma said. "We have been taking care of Eddie," she said. "Our home has been burned down," the pretty emu said. "OK," Emma said "You can live with us." The pretty emu introduced herself as Amy and they walked home Emma,Elsa,Oswald,Mama,Papa,Eddie, and Amy all through the steaming forest.
